An Interview with Margaret Jones, Interior Designer and Import Gallery owner who lives in Birmingham,
Alabama.
Question: Could you give our site visitors a sense of what you do? Background information...
Margaret: I
started my career in interior design after spending 20 years in the Health Care as a Medical Technologist. I am a graduate
of UAB and Southern Institute of Interior Design. I have been in business for 13 years and six months ago opened "A
Bit Of The World " Accessory and Art Gallery" We specialize in unique gifts from around the globe. We feature local
and regional artist monthly. In the interiors part of the business we do interiors for residential and commercial
clients.
Q: What is some advice for someone wanting to enter your field?
Margaret: The advise I have to offer would be
if considering a career, by all means get a degree so that you can work in both residential and commercial and become
a legitimate professional because there is more to the career than just having a "flair" for it! It is very detailed
oriented. It can be exciting but their is rejection associated with what you do for your client may not like all of
your ideas so you must learn to adapt to your client's taste.
Question: When did you get interested in interior design?
Margaret: I have always been interested in the field but only got serious about it upon encouragement from my husband
and a friend.
Question: What projects do you have in the works? What are some of your past accomplishments?
Margaret: Projects that I am doing include Carver High School, P.D. Jackson High School and Grace House, UAB Volker
Hall. I have done Ala State Acadome, Lawson State Nursing Building, Bham City Hall and Arthur D. Shores Law Center.
Question: If you were doing anything else, what would that be?
Margaret: If I were doing anything else I would do two things: I would be a bartender in a nice "Cheers" like
bar where everybody knows your name and I would be a Jazz singer and piano player in an upscale supper club( Although
I can't sing nor play I would love to do it)
Question: What is your favorite place to hang out in the city? Somewhere else?
Margaret: My favorite place to hang out here is Lou's Pub on 29th Street So. and Little 5 Points in Atlanta.
